La formación en el trabajo en Europa. Determinantes y rendimiento salarial

Los autores analizan los determinantes de la participación de los trabajadores en actividades formativas y los efectos de éstas sobre los salarios. A partir de datos de seis países del Panel de Hogares de la Unión Europea del período 19952001, construyen cuatro tipos de indicadores de formación. Sus estimaciones con mínimos cuadrados ordinarios indican que las actividades formativas generan unos rendimientos salariales notables en casi todos los países analizados. Sin embargo, los rendimientos no son estadísticamente distintos de cero cuando repiten las estimaciones con modelos de efectos fijos. Por tanto, las ganancias salariales debidas a la formación podrían estar siendo sobrestimadas al no tenerse en cuenta adecuadamente otros factores.     

Work absences and doctor visits during an illness episode: The differential role of preferences,production, and policies among men and women

This paper analyzes the absenteeism and medical care consumption behavior of employed men and women during an episode of acute illness. An individual’s daily optimization decisions are modeled in a dynamic framework to evaluate the role of (1) preferences for absences and treatment, (2) effectiveness of these inputs on recovery, and (3) economic incentives in determining the number and timing of absences and doctor visits and the duration of illness. In general, men appear to be more responsive than women to changes in sick leave and health insurance mainly due to differences in preferences.     

Modeling the dynamics of Chinese spot interest rates

Using the daily data of Chinese 7-day repo rates from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2008, this paper tests a variety of popular spot rate models, including single-factor diffusion, GARCH, Markov regime-switching and jump-diffusion models. We document that Chinese spot rates are subject to both market forces and administrative forces. GARCH, regime-switching and jump-diffusion models capture some important features of the dynamics of Chinese spot rates, but all models under study are overwhelmingly rejected. We further explore possible sources of model misspecification using diagnostic tests.

Natural oligopolies with exogenous sunk costs: A non-Suttonian result

In a spatial competition model with exogenous fixed costs and divisible goods, we obtain non-Suttonian results. When the economy is infinitely replicated, the number of firms does go to infinity but, as consumers’ income goes to infinity, the equilibrium number of firms tends toward a finite value. This occurs because the global demand to each firm becomes in the limit infinitely sensitive to price differentials since they give then rise to infinitely large differences in purchase expenditure.

Asia and the Reform of Global Governance

Asia's growing economic weight in the world economy is unlikely to produce substantial changes in global economic governance. National economic capabilities are not easily translated into influence over governance outcomes or institutions. Governments must deploy strategies of engagement with key institutions; incumbent powers will attempt counterstrategies. Coalition-building within and outside the region confronts substantial obstacles that reduce Asia's bargaining leverage. Asian preferences over institutional design and policies are unlikely to diverge from the status quo. A more pessimistic scenario includes resistance to global surveillance, spillover from other issue-areas, and defensive regionalism that undermines global institutions.

Risk management of precious metals

This paper examines volatility and correlation dynamics in price returns of gold, silver, platinum and palladium, and explores the corresponding risk management implications for market risk and hedging. Value-at-Risk (VaR) is used to analyze the downside market risk associated with investments in precious metals, and to design optimal risk management strategies. We compute the VaR for major precious metals using the calibrated RiskMetrics, different GARCH models, and the semi-parametric Filtered Historical Simulation approach. The best approach for estimating VaR based on conditional and unconditional statistical tests is documented. The economic importance of the results is highlighted by assessing the daily capital charges from the estimated VaRs.
